I have known Libera’s founder, Karen Haring, since 1987. When I learned that she was founding an organization to help girls and women in West Virginia, it made perfect sense. In West Virginia in particular, there seems to be a greater need for such an effort. Being near the bottom of the list for median household income in the U.S. means that poverty and cultural isolation limit many girls from reaching their full potential. That’s why I choose to invest in Libera’s work.
Many girls don’t have the opportunity to go to college—where they would be exposed to female role models and leadership opportunities. So, even something as simple as helping young women have a stronger and more positive self-image can be life-changing. That basic truth is the very reasonable goal that Libera makes accessible to all girls and women. They do this so very well, through their materials and small groups. Another reason why I support Libera is because I believe emotionally healthy girls and women make everyone’s life better, make communities better. This is true in every city, state, and country. With their voices and valuable contributions, empowered women make all of society better, in addition to improving their own lives.
